Banc d'Arguin National Park is located on the Atlantic coast, 235 kilometers south of Nouâdhibou, and about 250 kilometers north of the capital Nouakchott. The area of the park covers 12,000 square kilometers, and it is one of the points on the migration routes for millions of birds that come from Greenland, Europe, and Asia to spend the winter on the African continent. Due to the diversity of bird species, and its importance as a way stop and final destination for bird migration, UNESCO included this park on the World Heritage Sites list in 1989.
