Extremadura is a great place to get off the beaten track in Spain. Probably the most visited place of the region is Mérida, which well-preserved former Roman colony Emerita Augusta was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many legendary Spanish conquistadors hailed from Extremadura.
