The Metropolitan Cathedral Nativity of the Lord

The Metropolitan Cathedral Nativity of the Lord is placed in a beautiful park in the central part of Chisinau. This cathedral is the main religious building of the Orthodox Church in Moldova. The building is the work of Abram Melnikov, a famous Russian neoclassical architect. The Metropolitan Cathedral Nativity of the Lord was bombed in World War II. After the war, the communists prohibited worship, turned the cathedral into an exhibition center, painted all the frescoes and icons white, and in 1962 demolished the bell tower. The cathedral received frescoes again in 1997, after the fall of communism and the independence of Moldova.
