Janitzio

Janitzio is an island on Lake Pátzcuaro in the Mexican state of Michoacán. In the past, the fairytale island was inhabited exclusively by skilled fishermen, who fish for the local specialty Pescado Blanco with a technique using butterfly-shaped nets. The island is home to a monumental statue of Mexican hero José María Morelos. Many visitors decide to climb to the top of the monument, using a staircase painted with murals that tell about the life of the hero. The top offers a beautiful view. The island is especially attractive for visitors during the celebration of the Day of the Dead, when, in addition to the typical processions of masked people, a column of boats decorated with lit candles and flowers moves along the lake, creating a beautiful sight.
