Nikumaroro, also known as Gardner Island, is part of the Phoenix Islands, which belong to Kiribati. The island is uninhabited, mostly due to the lack of freshwater and the poor configuration of the seabed, which allows anchoring of vessels only in a small part of the atoll. The atoll was taken over by nature, and the authorities declared the Phoenix Islands Protected Area. It can be found up to 18 species of seabirds here, even one endemic (Phoenix petrel). There are also coconut crabs and rats in large numbers here. Sharks and bottlenose dolphins are often found in the waters around the island among 509 fish species.
